10 Steps to Overcome Your Fear of Speaking in English

Do you have fear or anxiety when you have to speak in English? Do you welcome your new neighbor and say hello or hide instead? If someone says hello to you, do you tend to respond hesitantly? Are you secretly hoping they won’t continue the conversation because of your fear? If so, you are not the only one. Yes, it’s natural to have fear or anxiety when we speak a language that is not native to us.


Why is it so important to first acknowledge that you even have any fear, stress or anxiety when conversing in English? If you don’t first acknowledge you have a measure of fear, it will likely interfere with the brain’s ability to learn a language. You may feel your brain shutting down. Why? High levels of anxiety and stress reduces your brain’s ability to perform normal tasks properly, such as processing language. Your overall progression will be slower.

Part of the reason people think someone isn’t great at English, when they are quite capable, is because they are holding onto fear. Although, you are serious about your English language training, you are always ready for your English language lessons, you do all your homework but there is still one element that has been overlooked, overcoming your fear. Just remember to relax, take a deep breath, gather your thoughts, and remember that no one expects you to speak English perfectly when it’s not your native language!
